These are what I consider to be the best drugstore mascaras that get compliments —The ones I have purchased again and again.
I take my drugstore mascaras pretty seriously. Here’s how I’ve selected my favorites:
- It can’t be dry/flaky
- No clumps
- No smudging
- I want to see thickness and length
- Lasts all day
- Removal can not be a pain in the ass, or I’ll never wear it and it will just sit in my drawer. When you’re over 40, pulling, tugging, and/or scrubbing your delicate eye area on a daily basis is a BAD thing to do. That area needs to be treated with care.

NYX Worth The Hype
This mascara IS exactly what the name says. I’ve been asked on multiple occasions if I’m wearing fake lashes when I’m just wearing this mascara. People are always surprised when I tell them it’s NYX, a drugstore mascara.
With one coat, .lashes instantly look longer and thicker. If you’re looking for high-drama lashes, this is buildable. Add another coat to achieve the look you want.
I love the easy removal, it washes off with very little residue. No messy raccoon eyes left behind to deal with. This also comes in colors now, too. And there is a waterproof formula available.
L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara
There are new versions of this old favorite, but I’m sticking with the original. It gives you fluttery lashes that rival any of the expensive brands out there. It’s “Butterfly Brush” with asymmetrical lash line shape extends and lifts outer corner lashes to give you a winged-out effect. The unique “Cocoon Fibers” wrap lashes giving the look of thicker, fuller lashes.
L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara
For fluttery, feathery lashes that are blacker than black, get yourself some Lash Paradise. Lashes look long and lush. Plus it’s packed with pigment so lashes look like black silk.
CoverGirl Professional Natural Lash Clear Mascara
Here’s a Tip: Wearing black or brown mascara on your bottom lashes can actually add years by creating shadows under your eyes. Plus it flakes and smudges more easily on the lower lashes. This clear mascara accents my bottom lashes just enough, without adding color or the possibility of flaking. It’s also great for wearing on all my lashes when I’m going to the gym or sitting by the pool.
You have to be selective with drugstore makeup, in my opinion. Sometimes things are cheap because they’re crappy. That’s not the case with these mascara picks.
They’re lots of lash,
But not a lot of cash.
