When covering dark circles, poor application can ruin the look of even the best concealer. And when you’re over 40, how to apply concealer can become tricky.
Wrinkles, dryness, and sagging complicate everything!
If you don’t adjust to the changes in your skin…
Concealer may actually start spotlighting your flaws in stead of hiding them!
— 5 Tips On How To Apply Concealer —
This might sound like a no-brainer, but think about it for a minute. How well do you remove your eye makeup at night? Have you looked closely the next morning?
To make sure I don’t have any added darkness around my eyes, like traces of yesterday’s mascara, liner and/or shadow, I’ve found that Micellar Water is perfect! Here is the very one I use.
I run a cotton swab of micellar water all around my eye and it removes any traces of old makeup before I apply any concealer. Having a fresh canvas really makes a difference. And since micellar water is not oily, it doesn’t mess up a fresh application of concealer.
Hydrated skin is key for a flawless application of concealer. I can’t stress this enough.
Do not apply concealer to dry skin. Ever.
Moisture plumps wrinkles, smooths your “canvas,” and prevents your concealer from looking dried out and possibly even chalky. (Gasp!)
This is an easy, important, yet often overlooked step in the process.
I’m almost 50, and I don’t really like primers. There are a few I have liked over the years, but generally speaking, primers are not a staple in my everyday makeup routine.
Maybe you can prime the area without using a “primer.” Sometimes moisturizer functions as my primer. Sometimes I use a BB Cream or tinted moisturizer as a primer before applying concealer. Both give added moisture to the area, PLUS they add a hint of color. They actually help concealer the dark circles before I ever get the concealer on!
Where I put the hot pink dots in the picture is where I generally dot my concealer on, then I blend it out from there. I try to get away with using AS LITTLE product AS POSSIBLE.
Putting concealer on wrinkles makes wrinkles look more pronounced.
I smile in the mirror to see where most of my wrinkles are, and then avoid getting concealer on those areas if possible.
You know that “big triangle” way of applying concealer? I can’t do that anymore. It’s too much makeup on a wrinkly area.
At age 50, less is definitely more for me when it comes to concealer.
Once the concealer looks just right, I want it to stay that way. I don’t want it creasing or fading, so I set the look. Locking it in!
When it comes to concealing dark circles, there is one powder I can’t do without. I’ve tried to go without it, and it was terrible. I really only recommend Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. (Click HERE to buy it on Amazon.) I might buy one of these a year, that’s how little I use.
I use a very small amount. In fact, I use a small eye shadow brush to apply it. I don’t use a big fluffy brush that gets the powder everywhere. I want a very targeted application, applying only where the concealer is.
Those are my 5 tips for more “mature” skin. Of course get plenty of sleep and drink your water! But when all else fails, get yourself a good concealer! Check out some of my favorites…
