I’m old enough to remember when cameras were only around for special occasions, like holidays. Today cameras are present everywhere all the time.
This means everyday moments end up posted on Facebook. By your coworker. Who doesn’t care if she’s posting a horrible picture of you. It also means you need to know how to look good in pictures.
I did some reading on how to look good in pictures and discovered that there is a WHOLE lot more to a good photo than simply finding your good side.
A Quick Review Of Tips I Knew & I Bet You Knew Too
• Smile with your eyes, not just your mouth. This means to squint ever so slightly. It makes your smile look warm and authentic.
• To hide a double chin or saggy neck, bring your head forward and tilt it slightly downward. You want to stretch out your neck skin. This also gives the appearance of a more defined jawline. This might feel unnatural while you’re doing it, but it photographs beautifully!
• Pay attention to your posture. Slumped shoulders look tired and frumpy. Pull those shoulders back under your ears.
• Generally, natural light is best – and dusk is considered the best time of day to snap a pic. If you’re indoors, seek out good lighting.
Look up. If you’re directly under a light, move!
Or you’ll have unflattering shadows like this girl.
• Don’t say “cheese.” Unless you want your smile to look fake and forced and for the corners of your mouth to be pulled back way too far like “The Joker.” Instead, think of a person, place or thing that sparks happiness for you.
I’ve read that you should say “money,” but I’m not going to do that. With my luck, the camera will flash right when I’m saying the “m” in money. Bad look.
How To look Good In Pictures—The Tips I Never Knew!!!
• Smile without showing your gums and keep your tongue behind your two front teeth, gently pressing on the roof of your mouth.
• Keep your arms away from your body. When your arm is pressed against your body, it flattens out making it looks bigger and it will lack any definition.
If you don’t do both hands on hips, try one hand — the hand facing the camera. If hand(s) on hip(s) is not an option, just try to keep your arms slightly lifted away from your body.
• If you’re sitting, bring your hands together in front of you in a relaxed way. No squeezing of the hands, and arms should not be tense and rigid.
The left side is the “best side” for most people.
• For a flattering silhouette when standing, put your weight on your back leg and turn your front foot toward the camera. To imitate celebrities on the red carpet, turn your body to the right about 30-40 degrees, then look over your left should. Most people’s best side is their left side. But if your right side is better, turn body to the left and look over your right shoulder.
• If you want to look long and lean in a standing pose, take the picture from lower angle. It’s the opposite if you’re sitting, take the picture from a higher angle. Who knew?
• When talking about how to look good in pictures, we need to discuss group photos. In a group shot, try to position yourself on an end, not in the middle of the picture. If you land a coveted spot on the end, angle your hips toward the group and turn your shoulders to the camera. If you land in the center of the shot, try pushing your butt backwards just a little to accent your waist. Cameras flatten features, and this will help add dimension.
• Try to never be the closest person to the camera in a group shot. You will look significantly larger than everyone else, in a distorted way.
• Crouching is an ugly word and an even uglier position. In a group shot, if you must crouch so people behind you can be seen, swing your legs to one side.
