Over 40 Makeup Tips: How To Wear Sparkle Like A Grown Up

I’m cautious when adding sparkle to my “mature” skin.
Because sometimes…All that glitters looks old.

Sparkly makeup can gather and settle into wrinkles, highlighting them.

It’s the ultimate betrayal really: Your highlighter is now HIGHLIGHTING your WRINKLES.

I’ve found some trustworthy products in the glitter game.  Here is a round-up of my favorite sparkly products…the ones least likely to turn on you.

How To Wear Glitter

BODY SHIMMER

I can’t say that I wear full-on glitter, but I do wear shimmer on my body.  It’s a subtle way to look healthy and radiant.

Burt’s Bees Radiance Body Lotion – The glitter in this is so fine, you can apply to your whole body.  I don’t really find it to be super moisturizing, so I apply this after I use my favorite lotion or mix it in with another moisturizer.  Sheet radiance!  Subtle, classy sparkle.

Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer  – Going sleeveless or strapless?  Highlight shoulders and collar bones with this.  Mix it in with your moisturizer and get an all over glow.  A little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts forever.  The argan oil moisturizes, and who couldn’t use more of that?

FACE SHIMMER

Laura Mercier Shimmer Blocs –  A staple in my vanity.  Great as eye shadow.  To highlight cheekbones, I swipe a fan brush over all four colors and dust on.  My favorite is Pink Mosaic (pictured), but there are many quads to choose from in gorgeous bronze and peach tones, just to name a couple.  Read my full review here or click on the picture below.

NYX Roll On Shimmer – By far the highlighter I get the most compliments on.  People are always shocked it’s a drugstore brand.  My favorite color is “Nude” (pictured).  Roll onto cheekbones for highlight and blend.  Also great to add shine to lids and turn a matte shadow into a shimmer.  UPDATE:  I think the roller ball may be discontinued, but there is new NYX Shimmer Down to here replace it.  Read my full review or click the picture below.

Pixi Fairy Dust – Loose, powdery pigments that add a hint of shimmering color anywhere on your face.  These are actually very subtle, just enough to add light to your face.  When blended, the colors sheer out beautifully.

I may be over 40, but I’m not ready to give up glitter.  I just have to be more selective with my products and more strategic about application.

Because I won’t let anything dull my sparkle.
Especially not my age.
